The Containment Wars and the Creation of the Sanctuaries (Part I)

The first violent conflicts between humans and independent ANAD swarms occurred in 2097, in and around Nairobi, Jerusalem and Cairo.  In some ways, perhaps, the conflict was inevitable.  ANAD systems had been growing in acceptance across the globe.

ANAD systems and poorly regulated fabs based on ANAD technology had become widespread, around the world, in every city and village and on every farm or commune.  Fabs (fabricators) based on ANAD could create almost anything inorganic that human beings could imagine.  Cars, furniture, clothing, sex toys, homes, electronic devices, guns, etc could all be fabricated from atom-scale feedstock.  All you needed was the fab, the core with its software drivers and the requisite feedstock.  Organic structures, especially living systems (strictly forbidden in most places) were still difficult, expensive and generally not worth the effort.  Otherwise, the sky was the limit.

More importantly, robotic nanoscale systems based on the original ANAD design (from the 2050s and Northgate University, Dr Irwin Frost) were widely recognized to be a parallel sentience and life form, both a companion and competitor to Man on this planet, even though the devices were created by Man.  The swarming nature of ANAD bots and the complexity of their swarm formations had given rise to the belief and understanding that ANAD swarms were worthy of being called a new life form.

Moreover, the spread of ANAD technology had been so explosive, and the swarms so compelling in their sophistication and behavior that the term angels entered popular use as a way of describing such swarms, with all that implies.  Angels (now a generic term for ANAD swarms that configure to resemble humans) were originally defined as messengers from God, spiritual beings and protectors and guides for humans in their relationship with God.  Angels as ANAD-style swarm entities were companions, love mates, partners, and all other things, even pseudo-religious beings to many people on Earth today.  Some people even developed swarm analogs of themselves, so that when they died, the swarm version remained behind…a strange form of immortality.

In this environment, conflict between Man and ANAD became inevitable.

The First Containment War

The first engagements occurred in sporadic clashes around the Mediterranean and east Africa.  Initially, the attacks were uncoordinated, seemingly random assaults on humans and human settlements, almost like ancient plagues of locusts or birds.  Incidents occurred in Thessalonika, Greece, in the Gulf of Gabes off the Tunisian coast and around Lake Turkana on the Kenya-Ethiopia borderland.

Gradually these incidents provoked stronger reactions from the Humans and over the course of several months, these reactions became more and more coordinated and more severe, as a way of punishing the swarms.  UNIFORCE, the enforcement arm of the United Nations, developed a strategy called ‘draining the swamps,’ in which large formations of troops would systematically enter and destroy known swarm hotspots and sanctuaries.  It was during this period of sanitizing swarm nodes and sanctuaries that the idea of an actual protected region, a real sanctuary, for swarm entities, began to surface and enter public discussion.  When some media personalities compared the sanctuaries to concentration camps, UNIFORCE did little to dispel the comparison.

But before this could come into being, more assaults and conflict had to occur.

The First Containment War was not called by this name until some years later.  The end of the primary conflict phase came about during the vacuum bombing and nearly complete decimation of a suspected swarm hideout along the shores of Lake Turkana, by UNIFORCE troops.  When Human offers of a truce and a peace treaty were proffered, the swarms in this area indicated that they were amenable to discussions.

The discussions were held between Human and swarm representatives in Alexandria, Egypt.  Talks began in spring 2098, and continued for months.  When the final Truce of Alexandria was signed, the first violent conflicts between Man and ANAD came to an uneasy end.

More importantly, the Truce effected several changes in relations between Humans and ANAD.  It brought a formal end to the conflict, the assaults and counter-assaults around the perimeter of the Mediterranean.  The Truce also established the swarm sanctuaries as we know them today: sanctuary zones in the Amazon basin, in east Africa and in the southwest Pacific.  In these sanctuaries, ANAD style swarms would have legal sovereignty.  The functional nature of the new Sanctuaries was codified in a set of laws and bills known collectively as the Containment Laws.

A growing symbiotic (some would say parasitic) relationship had developed between Man and ANAD.  Because of the growth and spread of independent swarms, quasi-official recognition of their status was formally granted by the UN and by most other political entities.  In other words, ANAD swarms now had rights, fully defined by law.  Not only did they have rights, ANAD swarms could have independent lifestyles and could reside (if they chose) in protected sanctuaries, which were almost like nation-states.  During Johnny Winger and the Golden Horde, ANAD swarms (angels) were given political representation in the UN.

The Truce of Alexandria also gave rise to the United Nations Sanctuary Patrol, a quasi-military, enforcement agency, whose mission and purpose was to patrol the boundaries of Human-ANAD space (i.e., the Sanctuaries) and ensure that all Containment laws and mandates were enforced.

Here’s an org chart, showing the basics of how UNSP is set up.  Like Quantum Corps, UNSP reports directly to UNSAC (the UN Security Affairs Commissioner) and to the Secretary-General, through the structure of UNIFORCE.

Sanctuary Patrol is organized in a manner similar to Quantum Corps.  The Detachment is the primary operational unit.  Below, is a chart showing how a typical Sanctuary Patrol detachment is set up.

Continuing our investigation into sister organizations that support the mission of Quantum Corps, in this post we look at the mission and organization of the U.N. Boundary Patrol.  UNBP deals with nanoscale threats that occur below ground, typically along active seismic fault lines or tectonic plate boundaries, hence the name.  It is an unfortunate fact of life in the Tales of the Quantum Corps that Config Zero and other adversaries use the medium of the Earth’s crust to transmit destructive energies, using nanobotic swarms to loosen seismic plates and facilitate destructive slippage along plate boundaries.  UNBP exists to counter and neutralize these threats.

Here’s an org chart, showing the basics of how UNBP is set up.  Like Quantum Corps, UNBP reports directly to UNSAC (the UN Security Affairs Commissioner) and to the Secretary-General, through the structure of UNIFORCE.

The sharp end of Boundary Patrol’s stick is the geoplane, a tracked vehicle that looks like a big metal articulating caterpillar, but with a nanobotic borer head at one end.  The geoplane can travel on and underground, down to depths of several thousand meters.  Geoplanes are manned vehicles and are organized into detachments assigned to patrol certain tectonic plate boundaries, as indicated in the org chart.  Below is how a typical geoplane crew is organized.

NOTES:

1.  Geoplanes operate on nominal Boundary Patrol missions for 2-3 weeks at a time.  They are manned, like ballistic missile submarines, with multiple crews (Red and Gold crews) for maximum availability and mission readiness.  There are 5 BP stations and a total of 6 constructed geoplanes (one is always in refit and repair).

2.  Geoplane detachments have assigned patrol areas but also respond to intelligence and sensor indications as to swarm activities or presence.  The SS techs monitor seismic and tectonic indications as to plate movements, tremors and seismic activity.  Many are known, from indications, to be “normal’ plate stresses and tremors.  Those events or transients with  suspicious seismic signatures are investigated.  By the time UNBP was set up, seismic signatures indicative of swarm activity are pretty well known.  Intelligence on new swarm and Config Zero tactics is an ever-present need.  Geoplane patrol areas are designed to put the vehicles in striking range of anticipated Config Zero swarm activity, along known or suspected tectonic fault lines and plate boundaries.  When a suspicious tremor is detected, the geoplane investigates and if swarms are detected, the swarms are engaged with geoplane weapons (HERF, magpulse, coilgun, etc) and on- board ANAD-style swarms.   Counter-swarm operations (CSO) are a major part of what the geoplane defenders do.

The next post in August will cover another of Quantum Corps’ sister organizations under the umbrella of UNIFORCE:  the U.N. Sanctuary Patrol and the Containment Laws that it enforces.

The chart above is the org chart for UN Frontier Corps, which was inadvertently left out of the previous post.  Text in the previous post refers to elements of this chart.  Sorry for the confusion. PB

The next 3 posts will describe the mission, organization, and general details of sister organizations to Quantum Corps, within the larger umbrella of UNIFORCE.  No military or political organization exists in a vacuum (except perhaps Frontier Corps…sorry, a little late 21st century humor there).  The mission of Quantum Corps could not be achieved without the continuing help and support of these organizations.

The U.N. Frontier Corps is one such sister organization.  Frontier Corps exists to protect UN sanctioned facilities and people off-Earth, whether on or around the Moon, Mars or wherever humans have expanded to.  Frontier Corps protects UN people and facilities and also enforces UN mandates and laws.

Frontier Corps is part of a larger organization under UNIFORCE called UNISPACE.  Just to put the overall organization into perspective, below I have reprised an earlier org chart showing the UNIFORCE organization, its component parts and I’ve circled the UNISPACE part.

Now, as I’ve indicated Frontier Corps is one of several organizations under the UNISPACE umbrella.
Frontier Corps operates under CINCSPACE authority along with several other commands.  Following is a brief description of each.

Orbit Command:  Responsible for protection efforts and mandate/law enforcement in facilities around low to high Earth Orbit, including Gateway Station, located at the Earth-Moon L2 point.

Lunar Command: Responsible for same on and around the Moon

Mars Command: Law and mandate enforcement on and around Mars.

Frontier Corps operates as a separate entity from these subordinate commands.  The Corps basically serves as sheriff and police department for the space lanes between the other commands’ areas of responsibility.

One service provided by Frontier Corps is a Transport Service, not shown on the chart, but attached to the Inner Planets Detachment.  The Transport Service operates the huge cycler ships that travel between (usually) Earth, Venus and Mars on regular schedules, sort of like interplanetary bus lines.  The cyclers don’t stop anywhere (except for routine maintenance stops) so it’s up to the local authorities to send shuttles out to dock and exchange people and cargo.

Sometimes, in stories of the Tales of the Quantum Corps, Frontier Corps cyclers and crews are coopted for duty elsewhere in the solar system.  Usually, this is because there is a ship in dock undergoing renovation or a ship readily available for other duties.

There has been talk of extending cycler operations toward Jupiter, but final schedules and resources haven’t been decided yet.

As you can see, Frontier Corps has two detachments, one for the Inner Planets, basically Earth-Moon, Mercury and Venus and a Jupiter Detachment, with offices for the Jupiter system and anything beyond that.  These Detachments and Offices are central points for mission assignment and control, resourcing the missions, law and mandate enforcement, including criminal and accident investigations, and anything else required to establish and maintain UN presence and control of human facilities, settlements, space lanes, and infrastructure in the specified area of responsibility.

As elements of the Old Ones approach our solar system and infiltrate and reconnoiter human space, we’ll see Frontier Corps working ever more closely with Quantum Corps to deal with this growing threat.

The next post will provide details about another sister organization: U.N. Boundary Patrol.  This is the organization that polices nanoscale threats below ground, in and among the tectonic plates of Earth’s crust.  Look for this post in July 2015.

Many readers of Tales of the Quantum Corps have expressed interest in seeing some kind of timeline of events that will help pull together the disparate parts of this story cycle. Remember that the whole cycle is still a work in progress.  Following is a timeline for the main character, Johnny Winger.

TIMELINE FOR Johnny Winger

2030:  Johnny Winger is born in Pueblo, Colorado to Jamison and Ellen Winger. Two siblings: Bradley and Joanna.

2045:  Johnny Winger lost in Eldorado Cave with Archie Hester.  His pet UAV Bailey eventually sniffs them out and saves them, leading them out of the cave.

2047:  Ellen Winger dies in a car crash driving back from Colorado Springs.  Father Jamison Winger devastated and suffers from deep depression at death of wife.  Winger children have to help with family ranch (North Bar Pass Ranch).

2050:  Parts of North Bar Pass ranch sold off to help ends meet.  Jamison Winger takes the ‘patch’ treatment for depression.  Johnny Winger applies to enter United Special Operations Force (precursor to UN Quantum Corps).  He is accepted.  Enters Basic training at Table Top Mountain, Idaho, USA.

2051:  Johnny Winger graduates from USOF Basic Training (also known as ‘nog’ school).

2052:  Johnny Winger commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant, United Nations Quantum Corps.

2065:  A nanoscale robot named ANAD has been developed.  The enemy is a programmable virus named Serengeti.  The Red Hammer cartel has created an addictive antidote to a man-made pandemic.  Quantum Corps has its hands full again.  Lieutenant John Winger leads his beleaguered nanotroopers into combat, on battlefields across the globe and inside the world of atoms and molecules.  The Serengeti Factor becomes the first episode in the Tales of the Quantum Corps.

2068:  Something-- probably man-made and probably started by the Red Hammer cartel—is altering the Earth’s atmosphere, accelerating climate change with a vengeance.  The air is becoming toxic, unbreathable.  And it’s spreading.  People have died, and more might die if the changes aren’t stopped.  Quantum Corps has its hands full again.  Lieutenant John Winger leads his beleaguered nanotroopers into combat again, in the second episode (The Amazon Vector case) of the Tales of the Quantum Corps.

2080:   Winger heads QC detachment to divert asteroid 2351 Wilks-Lucayo from Earth impact.  Conclusion of the Hellas Enigma case, third episode in the Tales of the Quantum Corps.

2082:   Winger promoted to LT COL and TDY’ed to UNIFORCE Paris, where he serves as assistant to the Q3, Directorate of Operations, on the staff of CINCQUANT.

2084:   Winger returns to Table Top.  Plans and heads up special op to kidnap Red Hammer Ruling Council member Dmitri Kulagin in Hong Kong.  This operation is code-named Operation Quantum Shadow.  Kulagin taken as prisoner to Table Top.  With Doc II’s help, a swarm likeness for Kulagin is prepared (an early form of angel).  Second phase of operation is to substitute angel for real Kulagin, to infiltrate the Ruling Council.

2085:   Infiltration succeeds and UNQC has an operative inside Red Hammer for the first time.  Johnny Winger and Dana Tallant are married.  Major Tallant is C/O of 1st Nano.  They reside off-base in an apartment in Haleyville ID.

2087:   Winger and Tallant have their first child, a son named Liam.  Major Tallant heads up special intel unit at UNQC East – Singapore, preparing for assault mission on Red Hammer’s new base in Hong Kong.

2088:   Coordinated assault on Red Hammer’s base at Hong Kong and at multiple locations around the world and on Red Hammer cells on the Moon and Mars.  Known as Operation Quantum Hammer.  Red Hammer finished on Earth but several Ruling Council members (notably Souvranamh) escape and head out into space.

2089:  Winger promoted to Colonel and heads up UNQC West at Table Top.  Jurgen Kraft detailed to CINCQUANT staff as Vice-Commander. Winger and Tallant have their second child, a girl named Rene.

2090-92:  First violent conflicts in Africa/Middle East between humans and ANAD swarms (Nairobi, Jerusalem and Cairo).  First containment wars.  Winger plans and approves East Africa operation to push swarms out of human spaces.  Dana Tallant heads up Detachment as c/o of joint human/ANAD unit.  Tallant is injured in one encounter and has to be medevac’ed.  She recovers with nanobotic help in a hospital near UNQC Central-Balzano, Italy.  Her rehab requires her to maintain an active swarm inside her body (sort of like the Red Hammer halo) to fight off future swarm attacks.  This procedure (Repairocytes) will be applied to all nano-troopers later as part of their normal equipment. Repairocytes are also the foundation for future performance-enhancing swarm modifications embedded in nanotroopers.  Winger becomes a hold-out, refusing to go through the procedure.

2093:  Jurgen Kraft appointment by UNSAC as CINCQUANT.  Promoted to LT GEN.

2096-98:  Containment wars truce (Truce of Alexandria).  Sanctuary negotiations.   Winger appointed by CINCQUANT (now Jurgen Kraft) as a delegate from UNIFORCE.  Talks are held in Madrid.  Winger decides to have the repairocyte procedure, when he is nearly killed by unprovoked swarm assault in his hotel room.  All top Quantum Corps command staff now have tactical swarm implants in their shoulder capsules for combat operations and embedded halos to protect them inside from swarm assault or penetration.

2098-2099:  Containment Edicts in force, with three sanctuaries (east Africa, Amazon, Pacific).  Winger helps develop and standup a new command within UNIFORCE called Sanctuary Patrol. UNSP is parallel with UNQC, under UNIFORCE.

2099:   Dana Tallant is appointed Q3 on the staff of CINCQUANT Paris, working for LT GEN Kraft.  She is given additional duties as CINCQUANT Liaison Officer with UNSP, also based in Paris.  At UNSP, she serves under MAJ GEN Sofran Chekwarthy, who is CINCSANC.  Winger and Tallant are separated by 5000 miles but try to keep their marriage going.  It’s rough, but the WorldNet and hyperjets make it possible.  Liam and Rene live in Paris with Mom, while Johnny is based at Table Top.

2100:  Nanobotic technology has advanced rapidly as the 22nd century draws near.  Bots and swarms are vital to the global economy.  But the same advances have created a new menace.  Evidence suggests that Man didn’t just evolve.  Life was seeded by the Old Ones, an ancient nomadic species of bots, traveling through interstellar space around the galaxy.  And the seeding didn’t work like they planned.  Man is evolutionary mistake and the Old Ones are coming back to fix it.  Colonel Johnny Winger leads his beleaguered nanotroopers into combat once more in the Golden Horde case, which is the fourth episode in the Tales of the Quantum Corps.

2110: At the dawn of the 22nd century, nanobotic technology is critical to the global economy.  Swarms are everywhere.  Swarms can even resemble people…they’re called angels.  It’s getting harder to tell them apart from Normals.  Out of the chaos comes a robotic messiah, a swarm savior named Symborg, who promises a new kind of paradise through the Church of Assimilation.  Along with these developments come some disturbing developments along the outer boundaries of our solar system.  It seems as if the Old Ones have sent advance scouts to reconnoiter what they started a billion years ago…and fix it.  Symborg may be one of them.  General John Winger leads his harried nanotroopers into combat in the Great Rift Zone case, fifth episode in the Tales of the Quantum Corps.

2120: In the second decade of the 22nd century, the robotic messiah Symborg is released from custody.  Strange showers of meteoric activity light up the skies across Earth.  The social movement called Assimilationism grows explosively.  An emerging sentience menaces the Net.  And the Old Ones, considered by many Assimilationists to be fathers of the human race, draw ever closer to the solar system.  General Johnny Winger is called out of retirement to face an old nemesis and the encounter will change him forever.  The Europa Quandary case is the sixth episode in the Tales of the Quantum Corps.

2155:  The Battle of Caloris Basin.  The Old Ones arrive on our doorstep, June 2155, as foreseen decades before.  The end result: victory, defeat, or something worse, is still to be determined.

The next post on the Quantum Corps Times blog site will come in mid to late June.  I hope all readers have an enjoyable Memorial Day holiday and remember, as Johnny Winger likes to say, “Small is all!”

The main promise of the Church of Assimilation is that we are all part of the same thing…we’re all estranged pieces of a greater entity.  This entity is called the Old Ones, or more benignly, the mother swarm.  Assimilationists believe that the purpose of life is to reconnect with the mother swarm.  Their public gatherings are called awakenings.  At these awakenings, believers are placed in an assimilator booth and literally deconstructed…disassembled into their constituent atoms.  The atoms are then held in containment to be offered up to the mother swarm when the Old Ones finally arrive…said to be in the year 2155.

Assimilation struggles with one great question: does assimilating mean just enhancing our minds and bodies as is, inserting bots and swarms to take over or develop or enhance new capabilities in our more or less original bodies?

Or does Assimilation mean ‘deconstruction?’  Breaking down the human body form into its constituent atoms and rebuilding it as a multi-configuration swarm, able to look and act like humans (as angels) but also able to act and look like other beings and structures as well.

Enhancement vs. Reconfiguration…this is the great divide in Assimilationist thinking.   Assimilationism is a variant of Transhumanism.

Here are some pros and cons of each:

Enhancement
Re-configuration
1
It’s easier to add new features and capabilities
New features are integrated into primary entity rather than being ‘bolted on’
2
Human society and civilization is designed to accommodate humans with two legs, two arms, one head…normal is single-config.
Single-config design restricts what is possible to a new being; multi-config is better
3
New features and capabilities expand what it means to be human while keeping a (tenuous) link to our historical past and pedigree
Historical pedigree and design is old and creaky. Needs re-work.  Lots of junk in our DNA (so we think), because evolution isn’t efficient

4
New stuff enables humans to go places they couldn’t go before…space, other planets, deep sea, etc
There are at least 3 billion years’ worth of experience with multi-config lifeforms…i.e. rapidly mutating viruses, etc.

5
Keeps evolution in the driver’s seat but helps it along; understands that it’s not wise to screw around with 3 billion years of experience
Multi-config lifeforms are more resilient, able to adapt to environmental change better.  Can thrive in greater variety of environments
6
Better able to confront and resist the Old Ones
Closer to presumed nature of the Old Ones; better able to integrate
7
Individual unit of life is valued (We say an individual human being is alive, not that his brain or pancreas is alive)
Individual unit is only a part of greater entity; true intelligence and capability is vested in larger entity
8
Individual human beings are collections of cells and organs in mutual cooperation anyway
Level of cooperation and collaboration greater with swarm organization of life units.  Diseased or damaged or non-functioning units are disassembled
9
Minimal structure required to maintain life (and avoid ‘death) is more complex.  Threshold for life-nonlife is higher and more easily breached
No real threshold for ‘death’.  As long as swarm can gather and communicate and maintain minimal structure, it is effectively immortal.  Minimal structure is very minimal, potentially a single nanobotic device with enough memory to assemble a new swarm config
10
Replicates more slowly; viability of single-config status essential to life
Can replicate new structures faster
11
Our role in the Universe is to fulfill our natural destiny as dictated by evolution and the original design and not tinker with the innards
Can go anywhere nanobotic devices can go, basically anywhere in the universe where a few clustered atoms and molecules can go (inside solid structures, etc)

12
Control of our evolutionary destiny lies with evolution, helped along with a few enhancements
Our role in the Universe is to fulfill our destiny as dictated by the original design…the Old Ones who seeded primordial lifeforms that became ancient viruses and whose genome lies at the heart of every ANAD-derived nanobot.
13

Control of our evolutionary destiny lies with us; we are descended from ancestors of the Old Ones and are destined to join with them again.

Doc II and Doc III, swarms which appear in many stories in the Tales of the Quantum Corps (originally created by Dr. Irwin Frost as simulacrums to represent him after he died) always wanted Johnny Winger to take the deconstructionist approach…to let himself be disassembled and reconstructed as a swarm being, able to assume multiple forms, yet also able to ‘resemble’ the original Johnny Winger.  In other words, Doc II wanted Johnny to become an angel.

Needless to say, Winger isn’t too thrilled by this.  Nor is Dana Tallant, his wife.  Would a reassembled angel Johnny Winger be the same as the original, even if the new config is nearly flawless?    Are James Kirk and Spock the same beings after being transported back and forth in Star Trek?

These are just some of the philosophical questions and conundrums that people face in the Tales of the Quantum Corps.

The next post will come in May 2015.
